Fort Hood:
Known as the "Great Place", Fort Hood is the largest active-duty armored post in the United States Armed Services, supporting two full armored divisions. Fort Hood also meets the training and support requirements for many smaller units and organizations and is also home to the U.S. Army Operational Test command, a major military test facility. With extensive recreation and employment opportunities, Fort Hood has a major economic impact on this Central Texas community and has been responsible for much of the rapid growth of this area.

Parks and Recreation:
In the mood to catch a Striper or a Bass? Have you ever seen a Roadrunner? The local parks are a haven for wildlife while promoting outdoor sports and good old-fashioned fun.
Cradled by surrounding bluffs, the two man-made lakes, Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir and Belton Lake, are excellent for fishing, swimming and boating. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA), located on the Fort Hood military property, is open to civilians as well as military personnel and features horseback riding, a waterslide, paddle boats, jet ski and boat rentals, nature trails, camping and picnic facilities. Education and Youth Services:
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is the focus of all Texas schools, not just those located in our community. However both the Killeen Independent School District, which encompasses Harker Heights, and the Copperas Cove Independent School District embrace the ideal and work to impart a love of learning to their students while teaching them the practical skills necessary to prosper as responsible citizens. All public school campuses, school districts, and the state are evaluated under NCLB provisions for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
In addition several colleges call this area their home. Central Texas College is a two-year school with the main campus located in Killeen. Established in 1967, CTC offers a wide variety of educational and training opportunities. Temple College is another two-year college located in Temple, Tx, offering convenient and economical education opportunities for students residing in Central Texas. Tarleton State University Center, is part of the Texas A&M University System and offers upper-level, state-supported educational opportunities and is located in Killeen. Mary Hardin-Baylor, just a short drive away in the city of Belton, is the oldest institution of higher learning offering continuous education in Texas. The University presents a variety of undergraduate and graduate majors with an emphasis on Christian education.
