The Centex Story
On a fall day in 1937, the foundation was laid for what would become one of the region's leading homebuilders. For over 50 years the John Crosland Company, led by a team of talented construction professionals, knowledgeable sales staff and experienced managers, earned a reputation for building affordable homes of uncompromising quality.
By the late 1970's the company had become the leading builder of single-family homes in Charlotte and the surrounding counties, and by the mid-1980's, the company had entered new markets: Columbia, the Raleigh-Durham Triangle area, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC.
In 1987 the nation's number-one single-family homebuilder, Dallas-based Centex Homes, joined forces with the John Crosland Company to form what is today a successful and winning combination.
Centex Homes has been one of the Triangle's leading local builders for more than a decade and is the only builder to be ranked among the nation's top 10 homebuilders every year since Professional Builder magazine initiated the ranking in 1968. To date, Centex Homes has built more than 300,000 homes and currently operates in more than 50 metropolitan markets in 20 states.
Centex Homes is supported by the strength and experience of Crosland's local roots plus the financial power and security of our parent company, Centex Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange and Fortune 500 company. In addition to being one of the nation's largest homebuilders, Centex, through its subsidiaries, is also one of the country's largest general contractors, with some of America's most familiar landmarks to our credit: portions of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys; Orlando International Airport; NASA Mission Control in Houston; and in the Carolinas, Levine Science and Research Center at Duke University, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
